Generally, this is of two kinds. (1) One form of ageism is based on prejudice. This involves stereotyping of people that is, failing to analyze the person and grouping them based on their age. This is usually negative. (2) Another form of ageism is discriminating people that is depriving them of opportunities because of their age. While some tend to do this for the safety and the good of the person, some tend to be highly crude.

There are many forms of ageism. People are usually categorized into three kinds: Infants or children, Adults, or Old.

While most of the forms of ageism tend to be negative and harsh, one form of ageism which is soft but unfair is treating older people in a very friendly way but holding them unfit for a purpose. In this, the older people are looked upon with pity and are treated with respect but d opportunities are denied for them. This is called “benevolent prejudice”. The exact opposite of this case is the one in which preferential treatment is meted out to the old given their need for comfort. One common form of this everyone could identify is the concession in railway fares for senior citizens.

Ageism leads to many effects, usually negative. The most affected are people with high potential but lack of age who are denied opportunities. This leads to financial problems for them. Also the stereotyping of older people gives them a mental sick feeling.

As soon as you know that you really do want to become a nurse, get onto your computer and research schools available to you.  There may be schools in your area, or near your area which offer nursing programs.  Also, some schools offer online programs for nursing.  There are different levels of nursing certifications.  There are registered nurses, Bachelors of Nursing, Masters of Nursing, Nurse Practitioners and others.  While you are deciding which school is best for you, you should be aware of the different levels of nursing education, so that you know how far you want to go in your education and which program offers what you need.

You can become a nurse with a two year or four year degree.  There is a current debate that argues that nurses should all be required to have at least a four year degree, but since there is a shortage of nurses which does not seem to be lessening, that debate is put aside, so choose the program which is appropriate for your life and needs, whether that be a two year or four year degree.  If you choose to study for your nursing degree in an online program, be careful to choose a degree program that is accredited, or you may be taking you program of study for nothing as it would likely not be recognized when you apply for licensure.

There are many different areas available for nurses to work in.  While you are studying to become a nurse, think about what area of medicine you want to work in.  Many nurses choose to seek employment in emergency rooms, so that they will be working in exciting environments.  If that is not exciting enough for you, you could apply for the high paced job of an air ambulance nurse.  If you want a slower paced career, you could work in nursing homes or even schools.  Some people want to feel the joy of successfully helping those in ICU’s but at the same time they face the fact that there will be so many that they will not be able to help.  These are things which you need to consider on your path to becoming a nurse.  Once you have your license, your opportunities are limitless.
