A passport is an official document that marks a person a legally recognized citizen. Better explained, a passport is a pass that lets you out of a port (a country in this case). Acquiring a passport is a very simple process though one needs to have a lot of documents supporting the validity and have to follow the procedure stated by the respective government. The procedure is almost the same for all countries except for certain added rules in some countries.

The general procedure to be followed for getting a passport is as follows:

The first and foremost thing a person is to have to be eligible for applying for passport is an official birth certificate. In case you don’t have one, find out how to order a one from the government.

The second important thing is a document supporting your identity. A driver’s license can suffice this requirement. If you are a student, a bonafide certificate from the institution you are studying would do. But it should be noted that this document of proof of citizenship should be legal and original documents are to be shown to the passport agent.

Once you are sure about the availability of these two documents with you, go ahead to get a passport application form. There are two ways to obtain this form:

You can download the form available online in the state government’s website and then fill all the necessary details and apply online. Make sure you do not sign the form unless it gets verified and approved by the passport agent.

However, if you are under sixteen years of age (for U.S citizens) or if you are applying passport for the first time, you have to apply in person.

After getting the form, fill all the necessary details correctly and ensure you have two passport size photographs or arrange for them.

Once you have the completely filled form along with the necessary documents (birth certificate and proof of citizenship and two passport size photographs), confirm with the passport agent and get the form verified and approved after which you and your agent have to sign the application form. The last step is to pay the fees. This amount varies with the government and also with the type of passport you are applying. Once the passport fee is paid and form submitted your application will be sent for processing and you are will likely get the passport within six months. If you need it urgently, it would cost you some extra money.

Home owners’ association is simply an organization created to manage the development of homes. The developer is relieved of legal and financial responsibilities and the ownership is transferred to the homeowners from the association only of selling a certain number of lots which is predetermined. These home owner associations are incorporated together and are subject to the terms and or conditions which are used to govern nonprofit organizations. One can be well aware of the laws of the home owner associations but these laws change from one state to another and in fact some states do not have home owner association laws at all. Statistics show that Home owners association governs about 23 million homes in the United States of America.

Home owners association exercises a number of powers like a municipal government. These associations maintain and regulate the activities and the main difference between a home owner association and the municipal government is that home owners association is not subjected to any constitutional constraints. If not for these home owners association, the tasks and duties performed by it would fall on the local government which would be an additional burden. The other discretionary powers of a home owners association is that it can form committees and appoint officers to these committees.

Home owners association provides a number of benefits not only for the local government but also to the people in that area. These associations maintain harmony and enforce regulations. The cost incurred by these associations in any public cause activity such as insuring structures or landscaping areas shared by all is levied as assessments from members. Though many people feel that preferring home owners association can be misleading, yet advocates personally suggest people to go for home owners association. The biggest advantage which municipalities enjoy from home owners associations is that property taxes can be charged any amenities in the state which may not be the case if these were owned by the municipalities. Also the municipalities are exempted from the responsibility of maintaining these amenities.

In spite of so many advantages with home owners associations, members in these associations are subjected to financial risk as well. In a few states in America, these associations can go on to deprive the homes of members in order to collect assessments. This leaves the people at risk though this is not the same in all the states. In the other states judicial procedures are maintained by home owners association.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification is a process by which a building is granted status as a “green” building, or one which utilizes resources in an eco-friendly manner. The process is voluntary, and estimates are that by 2010 at least 10 percent of all new construction will be “green”.

Since 1998, more than 14,000 buildings worldwide have been certified. To receive the designation, each must achieve a certain number of points in six areas: Sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environment, and innovation and design. Buildings with 40-49 points are categorized as “Certified”. “Silver” ratings are achieved with 50-59 points and “Gold” with 60-79. To be granted a “Platinum” rating, a building must garner at least 80 points.

In the category of sustainable sites, LEED certification depends upon evaluation of such factors as site selection, site development (protecting habitat, maximizing open space) alternative transportation (accessibility to public transportation, bicycle storage, parking capacity, and low-emission vehicles), storm water design, and light pollution, among others. A maximum of 26 points can be earned in this category, and as a prerequisite, the site must prevent pollution during construction.

Under the heading of water efficiency, the prerequisite involves a reduction of water use. The building is then rated for efficient use of water in landscaping, continued water use reduction, and wastewater technology. There are 10 points available for this category.

Energy and atmosphere offers 35 possible points toward LEED certification. Prerequisites include minimizing energy performance and refrigerant control. Points are awarded based on several benchmarks, including optimal energy efficiency, the use of onsite renewable energy, monitoring and tracking usage, and “green” power usage such as wind or solar power.

Materials and resources allow the project to earn up to 14 points. The storage/collection of recyclable materials is the prerequisite, and then points are given for building reuse (maintaining existing walls, roof, etc.), construction waste control, materials reuse, and for using recycled, regional or materials that are quick to renew.

In the category of indoor environmental quality, LEED certification requires the building to meet two prerequisites: Minimum indoor air quality, and the control of tobacco smoke. It is then evaluated for monitoring outside air delivery, enhanced ventilation, and low-fume materials (glues, paints, flooring systems, wood products). In addition, such factors as temperature comfort, daylight, and views are also rated. The maximum points that can be earned in this category are 15.

Finally, innovation in design carries 6 possible points, with credit being given for design and additional credit, if the designer is LEED accredited. Future measurements will include a building’s carbon footprint and emission of greenhouse gases, which will evaluate consumption of fossil fuels and refrigerant leaks.

For a building to receive LEED certification, an application must be submitted showing which requirements have been met. There are also fees involved for registration and certification, and application can be made online. Separate criteria are used for LEED certification in categories other than new commercial construction. These include retail (new and renovated), homes, and schools. There are also categories for neighborhood development, commercial interior renovation, and existing buildings.

Termite treatments are generally inconvenient, requiring you to vacate the premises, remove all pets, and wait until the potent chemicals dissipate to return. Orange oil termite treatments offer an alternative to traditional methods.

Made from orange peel, the active ingredient (d-limonene) is the same one found in many household cleaners. It will instantly kill any termites or eggs it comes into contact with, and will kill those termites that eat the wood coated with it. However, because orange oil is so environmentally friendly, its effects will only last for a few days.

Orange oil termite treatments are especially popular in California, which suffers from a high drywood termite infestation rate. And because Californians also have problems with air pollution, the people there are perhaps more sensitive to pumping chemicals into the atmosphere and more open to “green” solutions.

Many homeowners are using orange oil termite treatments themselves, bypassing professional exterminators. Pure orange oil is not regulated by any agency, so anyone can buy and use it. Its safety and ease of application makes it popular among homeowners who want to take up the task themselves. Many professionals have added it to their arsenal, sometimes, combining it with traditional chemicals and methods.
There are products on the market that combine orange oil with other ingredients that require a pest control license to purchase. Some of these are highly flammable and should be used only by someone trained in the use of such products. Pure orange oil, however, is available online or at many grocery and department stores and the restrictions do not apply to it.

Over half a million homes have been treated with orange oil over the last decade, and reports are mostly positive. Many homeowners have paid for a professional termite inspection to determine the areas infested, and then applied the treatment themselves. Others have had the exterminator apply the orange oil at the same time, while many did their own inspections and treated the areas without any outside help. The best results seem to come from a professional inspection and application.

Opponents of the orange oil termite treatment cite the fact that it is only truly effective when it comes into contact with the termites, and that it is often difficult to determine precisely where the infestation is located. They argue that by tenting the house and using gas, they can reach all areas and thus offer a greater success rate. However, proponents claim to achieve equivalent results at a much lower cost. In addition, many state their preference to use an eco-friendly product that degrades quickly and has no impact on greenhouse gases. Since most of the objections to using orange oil are being lodged by professional exterminators, unbiased scientific studies would be valuable in making a decision. Unfortunately, the few available are ambiguous or inconclusive. Ultimately, the decision must rest with the homeowner, and perhaps, the most convincing argument is that an orange oil termite treatment performed by the homeowner is inexpensive and, should it fail, traditional tenting is still an open option.

Roombas were introduced to the American market in 2002. Since then, over 2.5 million units have been sold. The company has also been working on several new models and is constantly improving their technology. But there’s this big question: Do Roombas really work?

Roombas are nifty little machines that scour living spaces and vacuum dirt off the floor. The machines work without the help of a person and have special censors around the room to define their boundaries. They’re efficient and reliable and do the entire house cleaning while the homeowners are away.

These machines appear to be amazing little gadgets. While they perform wonderfully on flat, hardwood floors, they also work extremely well with rooms that have rugs. Consumers have reported that area rugs are no problem for a Roomba and it can easily go from a hardwood surface to the rug. Even rugs with fringed edges prove easy for a Roomba to handle. Roomba’s are safe for antiques, too.

Operation of a Roomba is quite simple. For second generations, the unit consists of three buttons: “clean”, “spot” and “max”. For third generations, the Roomba has all but the “max” button. The button was replaced by “dock”, in which the Roomba will dock with its homebase. The Roomba can come with a Scheduler accessory. This tool allows the Roomba to clean automatically according to the time the owner specified.

When “clean”, “spot” or “max” are pressed, the machine begins cleaning the room. Roomba has bumpers around the disc to detect walls and furniture. The owner can also specify Virtual Walls so that the Roomba will stop at certain places. The machine has four infrared sensors that prevent it from falling off ledges, making it easy to clean upstairs. If a particular area is dirtier than others, the Roomba has extra sensors that tell it to focus on the dirty spot longer.

After the Roomba has cleaned for an already programmed time, it will stop and sing out a triumphant song. Second and third generations will then locate their homebase and try to return to it. From there, the owner should remove the dustbin and empty the dirt in a trash can.

For rugs, the third generation Roomba has a release mechanism in the brush deck that will prevent the machine from going over tassels. It cleans them, instead.

A roomba is small enough that they can venture under a bed without problems. However, if the unit doesn’t sense a floor, becomes stuck or it has decided it is in a narrow space, the Roomba will stop and play a saddened tune for it to be found. Third generation machines now have an infrared bumper that senses when it is about to collide with an object.

A Roomba is useful in all homes. Whether you’re in an apartment, small house or big house, this gadget can prove useful. Owners do not have to worry about moving furniture away or constantly watching the machine.
