Becoming a nurse is not a complicated process.  All you need to do is go to school for the education and training needed to be a registered nurse.  Once you have solidified your decision to become a nurse, you should research schools – this is best done online.  Once a person is a registered nurse, they can find a job anywhere they look, because there never seem to be enough nurses to go around.  If you are in the first stages of contemplation of becoming a nurse, you should contact a hospital or medical center in your area to ask basic questions, and perhaps see if you could volunteer or shadow a nurse for a day to see what is entailed.  Maybe it isn’t what you want.

As soon as you know that you really do want to become a nurse, get onto your computer and research schools available to you.  There may be schools in your area, or near your area which offer nursing programs.  Also, some schools offer online programs for nursing.  There are different levels of nursing certifications.  There are registered nurses, Bachelors of Nursing, Masters of Nursing, Nurse Practitioners and others.  While you are deciding which school is best for you, you should be aware of the different levels of nursing education, so that you know how far you want to go in your education and which program offers what you need.

You can become a nurse with a two year or four year degree.  There is a current debate that argues that nurses should all be required to have at least a four year degree, but since there is a shortage of nurses which does not seem to be lessening, that debate is put aside, so choose the program which is appropriate for your life and needs, whether that be a two year or four year degree.  If you choose to study for your nursing degree in an online program, be careful to choose a degree program that is accredited, or you may be taking you program of study for nothing as it would likely not be recognized when you apply for licensure.

There are many different areas available for nurses to work in.  While you are studying to become a nurse, think about what area of medicine you want to work in.  Many nurses choose to seek employment in emergency rooms, so that they will be working in exciting environments.  If that is not exciting enough for you, you could apply for the high paced job of an air ambulance nurse.  If you want a slower paced career, you could work in nursing homes or even schools.  Some people want to feel the joy of successfully helping those in ICU’s but at the same time they face the fact that there will be so many that they will not be able to help.  These are things which you need to consider on your path to becoming a nurse.  Once you have your license, your opportunities are limitless.
